Credit system vs. Semester system in education

When thinking about study in university, it is important for the student to know the type of academic system in the country in which he intends to study, because this affects the study plan and the speed of graduation.

The credit system (example: Jordanian, Egyptian universities)

It depends on the number of credit hours a student must complete to graduate (usually between 132 – 160 hours depending on the major).

The student registers subjects in each class he wants according to the number of hours allowed (usually 12 – 18 hours).

There is high flexibility: the student can complete the plan quickly if he takes more hours, or be late if he reduces the number of hours.

The student's average is calculated based on the cumulative average of hours, which means that each subject has a weight according to the number of hours it takes.

The student has the freedom to choose subjects (within the academic plan), which allows him to focus on the subjects that suit him in each semester.

The semester system (example: Turkish universities)

The study is divided into 8 semesters (4 years for regular specializations, 5 or 6 years for some specializations such as medicine and architecture).

Each class has a ready plan of subjects that the student adheres to, and individual options are very limited.

Graduation is not calculated based on the number of hours, but rather on the completion of all study plan subjects.

The system is more organized and streamlined, with almost all students following the same schedule, reducing the possibility of getting stuck in enrollment.

There is less flexibility compared to the credit system, but there is greater clarity on the way to graduation.

Conclusion:

Credit hour schedule: Flexibility – Greater freedom to choose subjects – Speed or slowness of graduation depends on the student.

Semester system: Commitment to a specific plan – greater clarity and organization – Graduation speed is almost constant for all students.
